Description
The goal of this study is to examine the travel behavior and attitudes of users and non-users of SACOG’s new dockless electric-bike share system. This study includes the “after” phase of an already completed “before” portion of the “before-and-after” study of residents in the greater Sacramento area and will measure how bikesharing influences travel of users and non-users. In addition, this study will survey bike share users twice over the course of a year. Survey questions will ask about travel behavior before the e-bike share system opened (through retrospective questions), during the early stages of use of e-bike share, and in the later stage of use of the (more mature) e-bike share system. We further propose to add two strategic goals to this second year of the project. First, we propose to build statistical models (from the survey data) to predict existing system-wide travel mode shift to better estimate system-wide vehicle miles reduced by the system. Second, we propose to model JUMP demand and examine regulation/planning scenarios (e.g. service area boundaries, vehicle caps, and other common regulations likely to influence demand). Not only will this study provide valuable information for local and regional policy, but also generate knowledge that can help other cities plan for similar bike/scooter shares.
