Keynote: The Sustainability + Safety Nexus
David Friedman is the Director of Cars and Product Policy & Analysis at Consumers Union and former interim head of both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. Before these positions, Friedman worked for the Union of Concerned Scientists where he served as a senior engineer, research director, and deputy director of the clean vehicles program. He has engaged in research and policy issues regarding the fuel economy, mass-size-safety interactions, and impacts of hybrid, battery and fuel cell electric vehicles. He has also served on several National Academies Committees. He holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering and from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and is a PhD candidate at UC Davis in transportation technology policy.
